June 6th is International Homebirth Day – as I saw others share their experiences in celebration, I too reflected on my own homebirths. Homebirth was an amazing experience for me and my family, and it set the course for our lives in a very different direction. Homebirth is becoming more and more popular around the world, as families are beginning to see the benefits of giving birth at home. In this blog post, we will discuss why homebirth is such an important experience for families, and how including your children in the process can change the way the world sees homebirth.
When I had my first child, I did what many first-time parents do – I followed the recommendations of my doctor and had my baby via a scheduled c-section in the hospital. It was not the experience that I had imagined for myself. While I was grateful for the care that I received, I felt like I had missed out on something special in not having my baby naturally the way I wanted to.
With my second child, I decided I wanted a very different experience and after doing some research I found out about the option of a VBAC. I knew immediately that I wanted to have a VBAC and was also drawn to the idea of giving birth in the comfort of my own home, surrounded by people who loved me. After failing to find an OBGYN that would support me the way I wanted for a VBAC, we decided that homebirth was the right choice for us.
Homebirth changed my life in so many ways. I was able to give birth on my own terms, in a safe and loving environment. I felt more connected to my body, baby, and family throughout the entire experience. I had the birth that I truly wanted and went on to have two more homebirths after that.
Homebirth is an amazing experience for families, and I believe that more families should be given the option to choose homebirth. Having a homebirth provides a safe and loving environment for your babies to be born into the world and allows parents to be in control of their birth experience.
Homebirth also gives families the opportunity to connect with each other in a deeper way. Including my children in my pregnancy and childbirth experiences has given them a different understanding of the process and they see both as natural parts of life. They have no fear of having babies and often play "Midwife" together.
By having homebirths I have been able to change the way the next generation views childbirth and helped them understand the power they hold within to bring new life into this world. Even our son is well versed and will be a great support to his sisters, and wife someday.
Homebirth has truly changed my life and set me on a different path, one that I am grateful for.
